April Birds and Such

Saturday April 30th

Spring migration has been very weak this season. Not much activity. Seems either the migrates took advantage of the winds to speed on past us or stayed further west as they crossed the Gulf of Mexico, coming ashore around East Texas / Louisiana. So, I've posted a few miscellaneous sightings of interesting fauna see this month.

Springtime and Access

Sunday May 3rd

Gray Kingbirds have returned

to summer and nest in Florida

Our local and state governments are slowly re-opening access to public places in actions to try to return some normalcy. Here in Southwest Florida access to beaches and preserves have severally restricted during the height of the Spring Migration. Very frustrating to those of us who enjoying our birding hobbies. For awhile I had some interesting activity around the feeders and fruiting ficus in my yard. But the not the activity that our spring migration hot spots offer.

So just in the past few days access has been opening up. Places like Rotary Park in Cape Coral and Pinecraft Park in Sarasota are offering some birding activity.

Black Tern at Bunche Beach

Its been awhile since I birded at Bunche Beach. Haven't really had the time.

But today I arrived at the low tide and found lots of birds busy feeding on the flats.

Had my first Black Tern of the year, in the company Least, Royal and Sandwich Terns.

A couple of dozen Red Knots were busy feeding in the exposed sea grasses. We had Short-billed Dowitchers, Ruddy Turnstones, Least Sandpipers, Willets, Marbled Godwits, Black-bellied Plovers, Wilson, Piping and Semipalmated Plovers too.
